Endline Assessment of MNHN Prog using the NIMS toolkit (Nutrition Intervention Monitoring Surveys (NIMS)
About Project
Nutrition International (NI) aims to improve the health of adolescent girls and women of reproductive age; pregnant women and their new-borns; and infants and young children through reducing anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting. To achieve this NI implements interventions with local governmentsand partners in selected high-burden countries in Africa and Asia.
Maternal and Newborn Health and Nutrition (MNHN) interventions are being supported by Nutrition International in Lodhran (Punjab), Jamshoro and Khairpur (Sindh), and more recently in Ziarat (Balochistan)
Inception Phase
Inception Meeting with the NI Team:
We initiated the project with a comprehensive meeting with the Nutrition International (NI) team to discuss project objectives, methodologies, timelines, and deliverables. This meeting helped in clarifying roles and establishing a clear communication plan for ongoing updates and feedback.
Desk Review:
Conducted an extensive desk review of existing literature, previous baseline data, and relevant reports. This review was crucial in understanding the current context and identifying key focus areas and data gaps.
Development & Submission of Inception Report:
Developed and submitted a detailed Inception Report that outlined the methodology, survey tools, data collection plan, and analysis approach. This report was reviewed and approved by the NI team, setting the stage for the subsequent phases.
Data Collection Phase
Development & Testing of Questionnaires:
Designed and tested the survey questionnaires using the standardized tools from the Nutrition Intervention Monitoring Surveys (NIMS) toolkit. The tools were adapted to fit the local context and ensure comprehensive data capture.
Permissions and Approvals for Data Collection:
Obtained all necessary permissions and approvals from local authorities and stakeholders, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and protocols for data collection.
Primary Data Collection:
Implemented primary data collection in the target areas, deploying trained data collectors to gather data using the developed questionnaires.
Monitoring of the Data Collection:
Established robust monitoring mechanisms to oversee the data collection process. This included regular field visits and supervisory checks to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
Data Analysis & Reporting Phase
Data Verification:
Conducted rigorous quality checks to verify the collected data. This involved cross-referencing with baseline data and routine data to ensure consistency and reliability.
Data Analysis Technique:
Applied appropriate data analysis techniques using SPSS software, focusing on comparing endline data with baseline data to identify changes and trends in key health and nutrition indicators.
Report Writing & Submission Phase
Compiled the findings into a comprehensive endline report, detailing the analysis and interpretation of the data. The report included actionable recommendations for program improvements based on the survey results.
Impact
The endline survey provided essential insights into the effectiveness of the MNHN interventions in the targeted areas. It helped NI and local governments to assess progress since the baseline survey and pinpoint areas needing further attention. Utilizing the NIMS toolkit streamlined the survey process, reduced errors, and improved efficiency. The data collected will inform future program enhancements, contributing to improved health outcomes for adolescent girls, women of reproductive age, pregnant women, and young children in the intervention areas.
