Coverage Survey Punjab, KP & Sindh

Objective:

Coverage Survey Punjab, KP & Sindh

About Project
Nutrition International (NI) has launched the five-year ‘Right Start Program’ in Pakistan, with the objective of improving the survival and health of pregnant women, newborns, and young children. Supported by a $CAN 4.9 million investments from the Government of Canada, the program addresses significant nutritional challenges, including high anemia levels, low birth weight, and stunting among children under five years old.
The program targets 275,000 pregnant women, 298,000 newborns, and 546,000 children up to 24 months of age with essential nutrition services. The survey associated with the program focuses on three key areas of inquiry: Infant and Young Child Nutrition (IYCN), maternal health services and nutrition practices (IFA-BP), and the availability and quality of healthcare services provided by facilities and providers.
These inquiries are designed to assess the coverage, effectiveness, and impact of NI’s interventions under the Right Start Program, ensuring that the program effectively addresses the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in Pakistan.

Services Provided:

Momentum successfully conducted a SMART method-based survey across three provinces—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Sindh—under the Global Right Start Programme for Nutrition International (NI). The survey aimed to assess the nutritional status of populations in these regions, collecting and analyzing data from 900 households in each province. The following steps outline the key activities and deliverables accomplished:

  1. Survey Planning:
    • Prepared and submitted a detailed survey plan for NI’s final approval, which included random selection procedures for survey sites and participants, training and hiring protocols, quality assurance measures, a timeline/Gantt chart, and a budget.
    • Developed and finalized the cluster and individual selection plan, ensuring appropriate randomization across intervention modules.
  2. Ethical Approval:
    • Secured ethical approval from an internationally recognized ethics review board (ERB) and obtained necessary local approvals.
    • All staff with access to survey data completed internationally recognized training on Protecting Human Subject Research Participants, with signed confirmations ensuring their adherence to ethical conduct and confidentiality.
  3. Survey Tool Preparation:
    • Developed survey tools based on the core survey provided by NI, including translation and back-translation, pilot testing, and finalization of training curricula.
  4. Quality Control and Assurance:
    • Implemented a robust quality assurance mechanism, including tracking systems for training, testing, and hiring of enumerators and supervisors.
    • Supervised data collection closely, with repeated interviews and monitoring responsiveness to ensure data accuracy.
  5. Survey Implementation:
    • Organized and executed the survey according to the approved plan, with regular data uploads and communication with NI regarding any changes or issues encountered.
  6. Data Organization:
    • Organized the final dataset with accompanying variable codes for analysis.
  7. Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Analyzed the survey data according to NI’s requirements and prepared a comprehensive final report. The report included summaries of training, implementation, quality control measures, completed indicator tables, final questionnaires in both local and English languages, and a financial report.

Momentum’s work culminated in a detailed SMART method-based survey report that was presented to Nutrition International (NI) Canada, providing critical insights into the nutritional status across the surveyed provinces.
