Capacity Building of health care providers in MMS Service delivery for smart skills up for MMS in Pakistan

Objective:

Capacity Building of health care providers in MMS Service delivery for smart skills up for MMS in Pakistan

About Project:
The project aims to strengthen maternal and newborn health in Pakistan by integrating Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) into antenatal care (ANC). Through a partnership with Nutrition International and the Ministry of National Health Services, the initiative focuses on training healthcare providers across five districts to ensure effective MMS delivery. Key components include a Training of Trainers (TOT) model, innovative training modules, integration within a Woman-Centered ANC framework, and a robust monitoring system. By aligning with national health policies, the project supports the Government of Pakistan’s vision to establish MMS as the standard of care by 2026

Services Provided:

Momentum successfully implemented a large-scale capacity-building initiative for health care providers (HCPs) to support the SMART Scale-up of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) in Pakistan. The project covered five districts—Lodhran, Battagram, Nagar, Jhelum Valley (Hattian), and Islamabad—delivering a structured training program through a Training of Trainers (TOT) model and Cascade Trainings for frontline health workers and facility-based providers.

Momentum’s role included strategic planning, coordination, execution, and quality assurance of the training program. The process began with a kick-off meeting with Nutrition International (NI) to finalize objectives, timelines, and communication protocols, followed by the development of a detailed Inception Report outlining the methodology, work plan, and budget.

Key activities included:

Recruitment of Training Personnel: Hiring a Training Coordinator and Lead Master Trainer to oversee implementation.

Development of a Master Plan: Creating a comprehensive training roadmap with resource allocation and logistical planning, securing necessary approvals from Provincial and District Health Departments.

Training of Trainers (TOT): Conducting a high-impact training program for 25 district trainers, equipping them with technical knowledge and facilitation skills to cascade training to health care providers.

Cascade Trainings: Successfully delivering 92 training sessions for community-based (LHWs, LHSs) and facility-based providers (WMOs, LHVs, Nurses, FMTs), using interactive adult learning methodologies.

Momentum ensured rigorous monitoring, evaluation, and reporting, compiling pre/post-test evaluations, attendance records, and training feedback. The project concluded with a final assessment of training outcomes, submission of a comprehensive final report and financial reconciliation, and a closure meeting with NI to discuss lessons learned and future recommendations.

This initiative strengthened the capacity of health care providers, enhancing their ability to deliver MMS services effectively and improving maternal and child nutrition outcomes in Pakistan.
